Hong Kong authorities have rejected 93 applications to employ non-locals as cooks, waiters, and cleaners since the government tightened a vetting mechanism in June, labour chief Chris Sun has said. The applications failed to pass preliminary screening procedures because the employers did not meet a ratio of three full-time local employees for every one imported […]

The Congo and Rwanda Peace Agreement: The Accountability Clause That Cannot Be Applied

The peace agreement between Congo and Rwanda contains one promise about justice: that no fighter will be taken into the Congolese army until someone has checked whether they committed atrocities. The last time Congo skipped that check, the soldiers it absorbed went on to start the war now being negotiated. The check is not happening this time either. Two meetings in Geneva, seventeen days apart, show why. On 29 June 2026, Arnauld Akodjenou, who chairs the United Nations commission set up to establish who committed which atrocities in eastern Congo, told the Human Rights Council that his investigators had finished […] The post The Congo and Rwanda Peace Agreement: The Accountability Clause That Cannot Be Applied appeared first on African Arguments .

Eritrea’s Coming Crisis? How the Lifting of US Sanctions Might Spell Trouble for Africa’s Most Opaque State

On 19 September 2026, the United States lifted its sanctions on Eritrea, one of Africa’s most enigmatic and repressive states. These sanctions were imposed by the Biden administration in 2021 for Eritrea’s role in Ethiopia’s devastating Tigray War (2020-22). Opinions vary as to the possible meanings of their removal: is it morally permissible on the part of the US? Will Eritrea’s inhabitants be uplifted by their departure? Is this a portent of a new US-defined political order in the Horn of Africa? Though these are important questions, the greatest impact – and a paradoxically destabilising one – may instead be […] The post Eritrea’s Coming Crisis? Why China won’t build its own Wagner in Africa

Attacks on Chinese workers in Mali are testing Beijing’s reliance on African security forces. Russia’s experience there gives China little reason to take on the fighting itself. On 9 May, fighters from Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), al-Qaeda’s affiliate in the Sahel, stopped buses and trucks at Zambougou, in the Ségou region of Mali about 60 kilometres from Bamako, ordered the passengers out and burned at least 40 civilian vehicles. One passenger told Human Rights Watch that the fighters sent the travellers on towards the capital on foot, saying they had declared an embargo on Bamako. HRW found no Malian troops in […] The post Why China won’t build its own Wagner in Africa appeared first on African Arguments .

10 India-sponsored terrorists killed as bid to undermine state's writ in Gwadar foiled: ISPR

Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Friday that 10 India-sponsored terrorists were killed in separate engagements as security forces thwarted their attempts to “undermine the writ of the state” in Balochistan’s Gwadar district. In a statement, the military’s media affairs wing said: “On Oct 22, Indian-sponsored terrorists of Fitna al Hindustan attempted to carry out terrorist activities in district Gwadar, in the general areas of the Gabd Border Crossing and Gwadar city.” The state has designated Balochistan-based groups as Fitna al Hindustan to highlight India’s role in terrorism and destabilisation across Pakistan. “By targeting these locations, terrorists sought to harm the very people they claim to represent and wanted to obstruct the development and prosperity of Balochistan. To protect residents and clear the area, security forces launched clearance operations in and around Gwadar city,” ISPR said. It said that in separate engagements, security forces foiled the terrorists’ designs and “their bid to undermine the writ of the state and spread their misconstrued agenda”. “In the ensuing exchanges of fire, ten terrorists, including one female terrori

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday set the illustrative price for wheat at Rs4,500 per maund for 2027, raising the procurement price set last year by Rs1,000. “In view of the increase in production costs, the price had been raised by Rs1,000 per maund compared to last year,” a statement by the PM’s Office (PMO) said. It quoted the premier as saying that the decision was taken with the guidance of President Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N President Nawaz Sharif and in consultation with the chief ministers of Punjab and Sindh. The PMO statement added that the prime minister’s decision was aimed at “promoting agriculture sector in the country, protecting farmers’ economic interests and increasing wheat production next year”. Moreover, the statement quoted PM Shehbaz as saying that the government’s objective behind increasing the proposed wheat procurement price was to provide relief to farmers amid rising production and fuel costs, as well as inflation pressure. “Providing farmers with an incentive to cultivate wheat is among the key objectives of the decision,” the prime minister said. He expressed hope that the new
