UK tells public to keep 3 days' emergency supplies at home following PHP software glitch

The British government advised the public on Friday to keep three days of emergency supplies at home, a message it said had been hammered home by this week’s PHP software glitch , as well as a record-setting summer of heat, drought and wildfires. Governments and businesses worldwide have rushed to secure systems running the PHP programming language after flaws were disclosed on Wednesday, forcing some services offline and triggering millions of hacking attempts in one of the most significant cybersecurity incidents in recent years. The British government said the internet outage showed the importance of its newly launched “Be Ready” campaign, which advises the public to keep three days of bottled water and non-perishable food in the house. Prime Minister Andy Burnham, hosting a meeting on the response to wildfires, said that in the past Britain had been “on the back foot” responding to emergencies and that it needed to be more proactive. The government announced a new wildfire response plan that includes deploying military aircraft. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said cyber incidents such as the PHP outage would become more common as AI made it easier to find ways to th

NCCIA prevents Karachi girl exposed to dark web group from causing self-harm: official

KARACHI: The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) prevented a teenage girl in Karachi from causing self-harm after she was influenced by a group operating on the dark web, an official told Dawn on Friday. NCCIA Karachi Additional Director Tariq Nawaz said action by the agency was taken after they received a lead from a foreign crime investigation agency, which he did not name. The agency also shared an email, he said, adding that the NCCIA then tracked the relevant user internet protocol (IP) address. The official separately explained while speaking on Geo News programme ‘Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath’ that information had been shared with the NCCIA that a group operating on the dark web had been influencing people to commit violent acts. He added that once the NCCIA was able to track down the affected girl, it transpired during a probe that she had been exposed to the group through social media. “She then engaged with them on a messaging application and was being assigned different tasks.” Nawaz said the tasks also included harming her pet, and the NCCIA was able to trace her before she could complete the next task, which was causing self-harm. He a

Lahore DC gives formal go-ahead for 3-day Basant festivities in March 2027, outlines conditions and restrictions

LAHORE: The Lahore deputy commissioner (DC) on Friday gave the formal go-ahead for three-day Basant festivities in the district from March 12-14 next year, outlining guidelines, conditions and restrictions for the celebrations. Basant returned to Lahore earlier this year after an 18-year hiatus, with the passing of the Punjab Regulation of Kite Flying Bill, 2025 by the provincial assembly on December 24, 2025. The legislation authorised deputy commissioners to grant conditional permission for kite-flying — which otherwise remains banned in Punjab — on specified days and at designated locations. In August, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced that the festival would next be celebrated from March 12-14. On Friday, the decision was formalised in notification by the Lahore DC. The notification, a copy of which is available with Dawn , said that kite-flying would be allowed in Lahore during Basant 2027 except at designated prohibited zones and subject to certain conditions. “Kite-flying through the use of permissible kite-flying material, as specified in Schedule-I of the Punjab Regulation of Kite Flying Rules, 2025 and Punjab Kite Flying Regulations, 2025 shall b
