Trump’s threat to strike Iran raises public concerns, congressional questions

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump has renewed his threat of military action against Iran, raising questions about public support for the war and Congress’s ability to restrain further escalation . With midterm elections approaching on November 3, polls show widespread dissatisfaction with the war , particularly over rising fuel prices and the risk to American troops. Reports of renewed US-Israeli military planning have also raised concerns about possible strikes after the elections. Trump made his latest threat at a rally in Florida on Friday. “We may do another little Epic Fury ,” he said, referring to the US military operation against Iran. He gave no details about when another operation might begin. The remarks followed an ABC News report on Thursday that the US military and the Israel Defence Forces had drawn up options for renewed joint strikes. The report cited two Israeli sources familiar with the plans, who said the strikes would most likely take place after the midterms. White House spokesperson Anna Kelly, however, told ABC News that “the United States will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the midterm elections.” The reports indicate that f

AIPAC’s shift

ON Wednesday, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) made an unusual announcement . The organisation would no longer endorse or make direct contributions to candidates running in US elections. This marks the end of a practice that AIPAC began in 2021 (its lobbying started in the ‘50s). This does not mean that the Israel lobby will stop trying to influence US elections. AIPAC will continue mobilising individual donors. However, the announcement is an acknowledgement of the growing difficulties associated with overt affiliation with the lobby and the pro-Israel agenda. The genocide in Gaza and the war in Iran have created a situation where many Americans are questioning their country’s support for Israel and the resources devoted to it. Democratic candidates have challenged US involvement in the Middle East and the $3.8 billion in annual assistance Washington provides Israel. No campaign has illustrated this with greater clarity than that of Dr Abdul El-Sayed, who is running for the US Senate seat in Michigan. In the Democratic primary, AIPAC spent $30 million backing El-Sayed’s opponent, Haley Stevens. Other political action committees also spent heavily on h

EDS patients in limbo as Hamilton surgeon Chris Holdaway stops seeing patients

Correction: This story has been updated. Dr Holdaway was not subject to Medical Council restrictions preventing him from seeing patients, as previously reported. Instead, a recommendation he works in a multidisciplinary team on these cases made it impractical for him to continue seeing EDS patients seeking treatment for vascular conditions.
